Scientists are currently working on specific laboratory tests which could identify CJD. One of these tests examines a patient’s cerebrospinal fluid in order to detect a particular protein marker. This protein marker indicates neuronal degeneration and therefore can help to diagnose patient’s who are showing symptoms of CJD. This test is comparatively much safer than a brain biopsy, it is also easier to carry out. This test is currently being developed alongside other tests for the disease.
