Are there variant forms of CJD?

Yes, CJD does have known variants, which can determine the symptoms and development of the disease. One of these variant forms is known as variant or new variant CJD (vCJD or nvCJD), and was the form which appeared in the UK. This form of CJD begins firstly with psychiatric symptoms and can be found in patients younger than the average CJD patient. This form is characterised by a longer period between diagnosis and death. Despite scientific research it is not yet known what causes the differences in symptoms and development of CJD between variants.
