How is the disease transmitted?

The fact that BSE is transmissible between individuals means that it is part of a group of diseases which come under the acronym TSE (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy). BSE can be transmitted to healthy animals if they come into contact with the infected tissues of diseased animals.

Can BSE be transmitted through the milk of an infected cow?

There has never been a known case of prions (the infectious agent of BSE) transmitting BSE through milk. It must also be noted, that if this were a possible route of transmission we would expect to see the calves of infected cows becoming symptomatic, which is not the case.
