By February 2009, CJD 164 people in Britain had died from the disease, and this number is expected due rise due to the long incubation period of the disease. Controls on high-risk offal were introduced in 1989 in order to try and reduce the risk of infection, however by this point it is estimated that between 460,000 and 482,000 BSE-infected livestock had already entered the food chain.
